Overview
One of our clients in Angola, an international engineering and construction company, sought our expertise for this strategic onshore construction project in the oil and gas industry. Having not previously operated in this industry in Angola, they recognised that their Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) in-house set-up was not suited for this project. The oil and gas industry as well as the project developer have stringent regulations to which our client needed to adhere. Our experts leveraged extensive industry experience to provide a medical solution that ensured the health and safety of their workforce, reporting, and clinical governance.
Problem
Our client needed robust medical support for an onshore construction project within the oil and gas industry on a remote and challenging site. As one of the largest construction companies in Angola and Africa at large, they were familiar with the Angolan environment. However, they had limited experience in the oil and gas sector.
For this project, they had to:
- Understand the challenges and HSE regulations for oil and gas projects.
- Set up a healthcare facility to ensure the health and safety of their people.
- Have a system in place for the provision of medical supplies.
- Proactively manage any potential health and safety risks to their workforce.
- Maximise productivity and reduce medically related absenteeism.
As their current health partner in Angola on another remote construction project site and recognising our longstanding expertise in the Angolan oil and gas industry, they requested our support.
Solution
Our Angola Country Medical Director with the support of our Consulting team first conducted a Site Health Review. This highlighted specific needs and challenges to be addressed on the project site. In line with the industry’s regulations, we proposed MedSite, an on-site healthcare solution for organisations operating in remote environments. The solution included the setting up of an on-site clinic, fully staffed by local emergency physicians and the provision of medical supplies. We also implemented appropriate clinical governance to ensure quality of care. In addition, the site medical team had access to the medically led 24/7 International SOS Assistance Centres for clinical case escalations and off-site movement of cases where appropriate.
The on-site doctors were able to track common diseases within our client’s workforce, providing proactive solutions to manage any exposure to health risks. We also provided health awareness sessions around these diseases – which empowered employees to take preventive measures.
Impact
Our comprehensive solution allowed our client to comply with the industry´s HSE requirements and increase their overall workforce efficiency as health concerns were addressed promptly. The provision of monthly medical data led to proactive risk management decisions being taken by the leadership team. As a result, our client was able to maximise productivity on its project site and focus on their core activities.
