Supporting Your Employees in Davao Oriental Province, Philippines Affected by the Earthquake

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a magnitude 7.4 offshore earthquake which struck early on 10 October, south-east of Manay, Davao Oriental province. Several aftershocks have been reported following the initial earthquake, with strongest measuring magnitude 5.9.

A tsunami warning issued by the PHIVOLCS remains in place for the provinces of Davao Oriental, Dinagat Islands, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Surigao Del Norte and Surigao Del Sur. PHIVOLCS has updated the magnitude from an initial reading of 7.6 to 7.4 and the depth from 6.2 miles (10km) to 12.4 miles (20km). Damage and casualty assessment are ongoing amid evacuations in affected areas.

  • Continue to exercise caution in affected areas. Expect aftershocks, which can cause further damage to weak structures. Do not re-enter damaged buildings.

  • Expect disruption to infrastructure, road travel, transport and telecommunications in the affected areas. Reconfirm the status of routes before setting out and allow additional time for journeys.
  • Ensure your accommodation and office have access to backup power to minimise inconvenience. Keep communication devices charged, with access to backup charging options, such as power banks.
