Alcohol and Drug Testing

Intoxication from alcohol and the usage of both legal and illegal drugs is a risk to employee safety in the workplace and organisational reputation.

The control of use of intoxicants in the workplace is a broad-based approach incorporating policy education, transparency and deterrence.  It is essential that organisations implement an Alcohol and Drug policy.

Some employees may be required to undergo routine (e.g. pre-placement) testing and some may be required to take random testing (e.g. employees in safety critical roles).

The detection of novel psychoactive substances (NPS or ‘legal high’) and the free availability of prescription drugs over the internet is becoming a technical challenge and organisations’ drug and alcohol policies may have to adapt to accommodate these changes.
