Overview
A Norwegian organisation operating in the offshore energy sector in Namibian waters was seeking medical support that was aligned with the rigorous standards set for extreme remote operations. This included the need for medical professionals with documented training competency assessments using Tempus Pro, ultrasound, and ISTAT. The International SOS team in Norway rapidly mobilised International SOS cross-border resources, expertise, and global network to design a compliant medical solution that met the highest Extreme Remote Standards and enabled the organisation to successfully execute a project in Namibia.
Problem
International SOS Team in Norway received a last-minute request from a Norwegian company managing an ultra-deep-water rig to urgently assist with setting up a comprehensive medical solution for the rig for the upcoming project in Africa. This included finding the right caliber of medical professionals, with documented training and competency assessments using Tempus Pro, ultrasound, and ISTAT to be deployed in a project in Namibian waters. In addition, they needed support during transit from Norway to Namibia, alongside their own medical personnel, ensuring a smooth handover to International SOS medics and a robust communication channel between the medical directors of the two organisations.
Solution
The Norway team immediately established an expert cross-border group comprised of International SOS medical and operational offshore experienced professionals from Europe and Africa. The team shared their long-standing experience supporting the client with each other. The expert group rapidly conducted a review of the medical support, including a gap analysis; scoped the necessary medical services and medical personnel requirements in Namibia with a focus on adherence to Extreme Remote Projects and the operator’s requirements. Working closely with our client and the global operator, the team put together operations processes, Medical Emergency Response Plans, and addressed occupational health and other requirements. Our client promptly accepted the fully compliant, tailor-made solution, which was followed by Tabletop exercises and drills to check, identify improvements, and verify the final Medical Emergency Response Plan and setup.

Impact
The International SOS medical solution enabled this Norwegian organisation to execute the deep-water project successfully in Namibia. It provided a fully compliant medical setup for the offshore workforce, allowed for workforce risks mitigation offshore, and saved time and resources on medical training through the provision of highly qualified and experienced medical personnel and support in Namibia. The project demonstrated a seamless design and delivery from the time of request to final mobilisation, enabling the client to meet the requirements for the project and their end client.
