Assistance is what happens in the moment: a 24/7 line to medical and security experts who act on your behalf — finding a vetted doctor, coordinating an evacuation, replacing a lost passport, advising on a fast-changing situation on the ground. Insurance is what happens afterward: reimbursement for covered losses such as a cancelled trip, a delay, lost baggage or medical expenses. Most standard travel policies offer little or no real-time intervention — they pay claims, but they don’t get you out of trouble. This plan gives you both layers in one place.
Standard travel insurance is built to reimburse you after something goes wrong. It generally won’t send a doctor, coordinate an evacuation, or make decisions with you while you’re in a difficult situation abroad. International SOS does exactly that — in real time, on agreed protocols, before any question of what’s “covered” is settled. You keep the financial protection of insurance and add the operational protection most policies leave out.
If you suffer a serious illness or injury and adequate care isn’t available where you are, International SOS coordinates your medically supervised transport to appropriate care, up to a $1,000,000 aggregate limit that also covers medically supervised repatriation and repatriation of remains. Crucially, we coordinate the whole event — not just fund it — using our own Assistance Centers and global medical network.
