MSDs are associated with stress to the body caused by risk factors such as working in awkward body postures, performing the same or similar tasks repetitively, lifting heavy items, bending, reaching overhead, pushing and pulling heavy loads. Exposure to these activities can affect the muscles, nerves, tendons, joints and spinal discs, leading to lower back pain, tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and injuries. Newer research also shows an increasingly important link between mental and psychosocial distress and musculoskeletal disorders.
