Case Study

Nutrition Campaign During Ramadan for International Petroleum Corporation

Ribbon

Overview

An international petroleum corporation sought the expertise of International SOS to support the health and wellbeing of its employees during the Holy Month of Ramadan. With employees based in five locations, including remote sites and their head office in Cairo, the organisation recognised the need to provide guidance on healthy nutrition and how to mitigate the risks associated with fasting.

Our health experts designed and delivered a targeted nutrition programme, consisting of webinars and interactive Q&A sessions, to address these critical health needs.

Problem

During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, and smoking from dawn until dusk. This can lead to dehydration, fatigue, low blood sugar, and headaches if not managed correctly.

The petroleum corporation was concerned about the potential impact of these factors on their employees' health, wellbeing, and productivity, especially those working in remote locations. They identified a need to educate their workforce on making informed dietary choices and maintaining hydration throughout the fasting period.

Solution

International SOS developed a comprehensive nutrition programme tailored to the specific needs of the petroleum corporation's employees.

The campaign included:

  • Webinar Presentation: A webinar, conducted by an International SOS Medical Advisor, delivered general nutrition updates with a focus on Ramadan best practices.
  • Risk Mitigation Strategies: Recommendations were provided on mitigating the risk of unhealthy eating and dehydration during fasting.
  • Interactive Q&A: A live Q&A session allowed employees to engage with the health advisor and receive personalised advice.

The sessions were strategically scheduled within the working day to maximise participation across all locations.

The content covered key areas such as:

  • Balanced diets during Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (evening meal).
  • The importance of staggering hydration throughout non-fasting hours.
  • Selecting nutritious foods.
  • Managing medication for individuals with chronic illnesses and other medical conditions

Impact

International SOS’ nutrition webinar was attended by over 70 employees from multiple locations within the organisation. The session empowered the international petroleum corporation's employees with the knowledge and tools necessary to maintain their health and wellbeing during Ramadan. By providing expert guidance on nutrition and hydration.

The campaign contributed to:

  • Improved Employee Wellbeing: Enhanced understanding of healthy practices, leading to better physical and mental wellbeing during Ramadan.
  • Reduced Health Risks: Mitigation of risks associated with unhealthy eating habits and dehydration.
  • Increased Productivity: Minimising fatigue and maintaining energy levels throughout the working day.
  • Demonstrated Duty of Care: Reinforcing the organisation's commitment to the health and safety of its employees, particularly those in remote locations.

This proactive approach to employee health during Ramadan showcases the petroleum corporation's dedication to its workforce and its commitment to fostering a healthy and productive work environment.
