Case Study

Pregnancy Complications on a Leisure Trip to Vietnam

Ribbon

Overview

When a pregnant traveller faced a critical medical emergency abroad, International SOS quickly coordinated specialised care and multi-stage transfers across countries. Their expert response ensured both mother and baby received lifesaving treatment and safely returned home.

Problem

A 37-year-old American female on leisure travel in Vietnam, who was 28 weeks pregnant, experienced excessive bleeding and sought medical attention nearby. The local hospital could not provide a blood transfusion or neonatal care.

She wanted to deliver at home in the United States, but the baby went into fetal distress. The family called International SOS.

Solution

International SOS coordinated movement to another local facility and subsequently to Ho Chi Minh City via ground ambulance with a physician and nurse for upgrade in care.

An emergency C-section was conducted. However, Ho Chi Minh City was not adequate for the advanced medical care required, and an air ambulance was arranged to a preferred and qualified provider in Bangkok, Thailand, along with a guarantee of payment.

Impact

She and her newborn were medically monitored by International SOS, and following a three-month inpatient stay in Bangkok, she was discharged and travelled back home to the United States.

ROI

In the end, mother and baby recovered very well from an exceptionally stressful situation outside the borders of their own country and returned home safely, thanks to International SOS medical experts and its qualified and vetted partners.
