How We Prevented an Infectious Outbreak Offshore

International SOS Offshore in Middle East Africa

A leading oil and gas operator managing offshore operations partnered with EMSA JV (an International SOS Group company) to deliver exceptional offshore onsite medical services, ensuring workforce wellbeing and business continuity. A recent discovery of a viral infection aboard one of their offshore vessels highlighted the essential need for the highest standards of medical care and expertise in remote environments. The quick response not only managed the incident effectively but also emphasized the importance of proactive health strategies in ensuring the safety of operations.

Viral Infection Onboard an Offshore Vessel

Our client’s offshore facility is located on a vessel in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, several nautical miles from any advanced medical infrastructure. During routine operations, a crew member began to feel unwell and presented symptoms initially resembling an allergic reaction. However, upon further assessment, the onsite medical team identified signs of Chickenpox. In such environments, any delay in diagnosing and implementing containment measures could lead to widespread infection and significant operational disruptions.

How our Onsite Medical Team Responded

Our onsite clinic team immediately activated infectious disease outbreak protocols and implemented a series of measures, including:

  • Rapid Isolation and Evacuation: The symptomatic crew member was safely evacuated from the vessel to Malta under a pre-established emergency plan for advanced care and isolation.
  • Comprehensive Immunity Survey: All personnel aboard the vessel were screened to assess immunity status, enabling targeted preventive measures.
  • Health Education and Monitoring: Daily health checks and educational briefings empowered the workforce to recognize symptoms and report early.
  • Continuous Communication: Our medical team maintained close coordination with our client to provide proactive and frequent updates throughout the incident.

What was the Impact of this Rapid Resolution?

With our onsite medical services on board our client’s vessel, the team was able to recognize and address the situation from escalation while ensuring the infected employees received the highest quality care.

  • Outbreak Prevented Through Rapid Intervention: Immediate onsite care and evacuation protocols effectively contained the situation, preventing a potential health crisis aboard the vessel.
  • Early Detection of Second Case: Thanks to proactive education, a second crew member self-reported mild symptoms, allowing swift isolation and preventing further spread.
  • Seamless Continuity of Care: From the initial diagnosis through evacuation and post-recovery monitoring, EMSA served as a single point of contact, significantly reducing the administrative burden on the client.
  • No Operational Disruption: Despite two confirmed cases, operations aboard the vessel continued uninterrupted, showcasing the effectiveness of integrated medical solutions.
  • Enhanced Workforce Wellbeing: Educational sessions and proactive health monitoring improved health awareness and engagement among personnel.
