Client Story
Emergency Cardiac Support in Baghdad
Updated

Recently our Assistance Center (AC) received an urgent call about a German business traveler, an employee of our client, who had been admitted to a hospital in Baghdad with severe chest pain. Despite the seriousness of his symptoms, he discharged himself against medical advice a few hours later, explaining that he did not trust the facility.
From that moment on, the situation required continuous medical guidance, patient reassurance, and fast decision-making. Our Dubai AC medical team remained in close contact with him, urging immediate reassessment at a trusted hospital within the International Zone.
When security restrictions prevented access, our experts identified the closest vetted hospital outside the zone, briefed its emergency team ahead of the patient’s arrival, and continued to monitor his condition closely.
Gaining the patient’s cooperation became a crucial step. Once he agreed to further evaluation, additional tests confirmed the severity of his condition and the need for urgent evacuation.
An air ambulance was activated, and within 24 hours of the initial call, the patient was safely transferred to Dubai for advanced cardiac care. He later recovered and was repatriated to Germany.
Throughout the incident, we coordinated every stage of the operation with care, including ground ambulance transfer to Baghdad International Airport, a secure tarmac handover, and medical care in Dubai.
The case highlighted how quickly a medical emergency can escalate in a high-risk environment and how vital expert guidance becomes when security and clinical concerns intersect.
The patient’s sudden cardiac symptoms required immediate medical intervention. However, several factors heightened the risk:
The combination of a critical health emergency, limited medical infrastructure, and security constraints required a rapid, coordinated response backed by clinical expertise.
We activated its medical and operational teams as soon as the call came in. In the hours after the patient discharged himself, the priority was to regain clinical oversight and guide him toward safe, appropriate care. Our medical team stayed in constant contact, assessing his symptoms and stressing the urgency of returning to a trusted facility.
Security restrictions prevented access to the International Zone, so the Dubai Assistance Center reviewed available medical options and identified one of our nearest vetted hospitals outside the zone. Before the patient even arrived, the hospital’s emergency team had been briefed on the clinical concerns and was prepared to receive him immediately.
Once the patient agreed to continue his assessment, further tests confirmed the severity of his condition. With this confirmation, we initiated a time-critical evacuation plan.
Ground ambulance transport to Baghdad International Airport was secured, along with a controlled tarmac handover to reduce risk in the high-threat environment. At the same time, the air ambulance was secured, and all required clearances were obtained.
Throughout this process, the client received continuous updates and clear guidance on evacuation pathways and approval requirements. Upon departure from Baghdad, arrangements were already confirmed in Dubai, including guaranteed medical care and direct admission upon landing. After receiving treatment and being stabilized, the patient was cleared to return to Germany.
Key actions included:
The coordinated response ensured the patient received urgent cardiac care that was not locally available. Every hour saved contributed directly to his positive outcome.
For the patient, we provided a safe and guided path from a destabilizing situation in Baghdad to advanced treatment in Dubai and eventual recovery at home. Continuous communication helped him make informed decisions at a time when hesitation could have been fatal.
For our client, the operation prioritized strong Duty of Care execution in one of the most challenging environments. They were kept informed of every step and had a single partner navigating medical complexity, local limitations, and cross-border logistics.
The rapid evacuation minimized uncertainty and prevented prolonged disruption to their operations in Iraq. It also reinforced the value of having immediate access to global medical governance and regionally informed decision-making.
