UPDATE: Ebola Outbreak in the DRC

31 July 2019 ,  —

The continuing Ebola outbreak in the DRC is now the largest experienced in the country, affecting over 2,600 people to date. A year on from the start of the outbreak, the active conflict zone is also adding extra complexity, hindering response efforts.

Our medical expert Irene Lai comments, “The WHO has now declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Organisations with travellers in or planning to visit the DRC must ensure they have access to real time information, continue to assess their risks, and have ongoing communications with travellers and escalation plans.”

Our security expert K R Jawahar comments, “Not only is the ongoing conflict having an impact but, since the outbreak, there have been a number of attacks on healthcare workers and health centres. More than 120 rebel and militia groups are operating in the provinces affected by Ebola, which has impacted the response to the crisis and freedom of movement.”
