Risk Summary

The main threat to travellers is from street crime, especially opportunist theft of bags and valuables; foreign nationals are often targeted due to their perceived wealth. Highway banditry and armed robbery can also present a threat in rural areas. Socio-political unrest breaks out sporadically, and while usually short-lived, it can sometimes escalate into vandalism and looting, cause travel disruption and/or pose incidental risks to nearby personnel. In the northern provinces of Soum, Loroum and Oudalan along the Malian border, security precautions are required due to the proximity to areas of Mali where jihadist militants are known to be present.

This information is intended as a summary of the travel security environment; however, the risks can change at short notice during a crisis or evolving situation. Please check our travel security alerts to ensure you are informed of the most recent developments.
