    HIGH MEDICAL RISK for Myanmar
    MEDIUM TRAVEL RISK for Myanmar
HIGH TRAVEL RISK for Insurgency-affected and other border areas (except Indian border); far northern Rakhine state

Risk Summary

The security environment varies considerably across the country; travel is possible in many parts of Myanmar but is restricted in some areas. Weapons and drug smuggling operations as well as the presence of militant ethnic-separatist groups pose a greater risk in the border areas of China, Laos, Thailand and Bangladesh. Insurgents are active in northern, eastern and south-eastern parts of Kachin and Shan states, as well as parts of Kayin state.

Terrorist violence in major urban centres is rare; however, armed groups retain the ability to carry out small-scale bombings in cities such as Yangon (Rangoon), Mandalay and the capital Naypyitaw. Communal tensions between Buddhists and minority Muslim Rohingya communities occasionally degenerate into bouts of unrest that pose a serious incidental risk to those in the vicinity, particularly in northern townships of Rakhine state.

Visitors should be aware of the prevalence of state security, including the surveillance of foreigners. Crime levels are low because of the pervasive presence of the security forces. However, there are increasing reports of foreign travellers being overcharged in taxis, restaurants and hotels. Overland travel conditions, while improving, are often poor and access to petrol is not guaranteed in all areas.

This information is intended as a summary of the travel security environment; however, the risks can change at short notice during a crisis or evolving situation. Check our alerts to ensure you are informed of the most recent developments.
