COVID-19 information for Guinea-Bissau

Dedicated COVID-19 website

Opportunistic crime and road traffic accidents are the most common issues faced by travellers to Guinea-Bissau. Violent crime is rare in the capital Bissau; however, the country's status as a hub for drug trafficking as a result of the entrenchment of organised crime and the inadequacy of the security forces means that precautions against crime are required.

The country has a history of political instability and tensions between the government and military, which can result in travel restrictions such as curfews and border closures. While such political developments can prompt unrest that may pose incidental risks to foreign travellers, they have rarely had a serious or direct impact on foreign residents or travellers.

Travel outside the capital carries a greater risk due to the threat of banditry and the poor state of roads. Night travel should be avoided and enhanced precautions are needed when travelling to areas along the border with Senegal. Remote rural areas continue to carry the threat of unexploded landmines.

This information is intended as a summary of the travel security environment; however, the risks can change at short notice during a crisis or evolving situation. Please check our travel security alerts to ensure you are informed of the most recent developments.
