Risk Summary

Travel to Yemen presents complex and unpredictable security challenges. Militancy, separatist and sectarian conflicts continue to strongly undermine political stability, which has been severely diminished since a takeover of the capital Sanaa and the central government by the Zaydi Houthi rebel group from mid-2014, and a subsequent air and ground campaign by a regional coalition opposed to the group. Nationwide, various armed tribal groups control territories and local institutions, and pose serious security threats to members in these areas. Foreigners continue to face direct risks from violent crime, kidnapping and militancy, including in Sanaa, and travel risks for the whole of the mainland are rated as EXTREME.

The Houthi movement and its military allies control large areas of several northern and western provinces, as well as several key central provinces, and there are frequent clashes involving Houthi elements and various rivals displaced by the Houthi power grab. The outlook for the security environment is highly uncertain, and the current situation is volatile. Islamist extremist militants retain the capability to stage regular – and often mass-casualty – attacks in urban areas. Military (including foreign coalition forces), militia or tribal operations against them periodically entail major fighting.

This information is intended as a summary of the travel security environment; however, the risks can change at short notice during a crisis or evolving situation. Please check our travel alerts to ensure that you are informed of the most recent developments.
