Risk Summary

Murder, rape, robbery and gang violence are significant problems throughout the island. Most victims are locals, but foreigners can be targeted because of their perceived wealth, and clashes between rival gangs pose an incidental risk, though most inter-gang violence takes place in low-income neighbourhoods that business personnel have little reason to visit. Violent crime is common in Kingston – particularly in the West Kingston area – and Spanish town, where armed gangs are active and drug trafficking is widespread. Petty and violent crime is an issue in Montego Bay, Negril and other beach resorts; there have been frequent occurrences of pickpocketing, as well as occasional incidents of violence against victims who resist robberies. Crime rates are generally lower away from main urban areas. Political violence has decreased in intensity but tends to spike during election periods.
