    MEDIUM MEDICAL RISK for Morocco
    LOW TRAVEL RISK for Morocco
MEDIUM TRAVEL RISK for Western Sahara

Risk Summary

Petty crime is the main risk facing foreign travellers, particularly in urban areas. Violent crime against foreigners remains unusual. Mugging, mobile telephone theft and bag-snatching can be problems in Casablanca in particular, while pickpocketing is widespread in areas that tourists frequent. There is a credible risk of terrorist attacks by Islamist militants on government targets or places popular with tourists.

The production and smuggling of drugs underpin the informal economy and fuel crime in the northern Rif area, where under-development also occasionally triggers bouts of social unrest. Nevertheless, the security environment is more problematic in the Western Sahara, and while travel to Moroccan-occupied areas is unrestricted, foreign business activities are confined to the capital Laayoune, Bu Craa and Dakhla. Travel outside these towns should be undertaken only with the knowledge of the UN peacekeeping mission. There is a credible risk of kidnapping by Islamist militants in the Western Sahara.
