The main risk to travellers is from opportunistic petty crime, though targeted incidents of violent robbery can occur in areas frequented by foreigners. Ethnic violence and the presence of militias on both sides of the Ivorian border in relation to successive conflicts have contributed to lawlessness and banditry, though this mainly affects local villages. Sporadic outbreaks of violence resulting from disputes over land, illegal mining and the exploitation of natural resources pose a potential threat to members in remote locations. Outside the capital Monrovia, basic infrastructure for business travel, including suitable accommodation, is almost non-existent.

This information is intended as a summary of the travel security environment; however, the risks can change at short notice during a crisis or evolving situation. Please check our travel security alerts to ensure you are informed of the most recent developments.
