    LOW TRAVEL RISK for Cuba

Risk Summary

Petty crime presents a slight, but persistent risk to business travellers. The threat is more pronounced in Havana and other tourist locations. Violent crime is rare. The risk from militancy is low, including from radical groups opposed to the regime.

The centralised power structure of the government has led to repression of freedom of speech; criticism of the regime is sufficient grounds for arrest. Severe punishments for such offences are meted out to local residents and foreigners alike.

The island is prone to hurricanes from August to November (though the hurricane season officially runs from June to November) and the country in general is susceptible to earthquakes.

Accommodation, telecommunications and banking infrastructure are gradually developing. However, they remain insufficient, posing challenges for those travelling to Cuba.

This information is intended as a summary of the travel security environment; however, the risks can change at short notice during a crisis or evolving situation. Please check our travel security alerts to ensure you are informed of the most recent developments.
