    LOW TRAVEL RISK for Asmara
HIGH TRAVEL RISK for Ethiopian, Sudanese, Djiboutian borders

Risk Summary

Travellers face little risk in the capital Asmara and coastal towns. Levels of petty and violent crime are low. Members should nevertheless employ basic security precautions, particularly if conducting pedestrian journeys at night. Travellers should stay informed of any restrictions imposed by the authorities. Most notably, all foreign nationals travelling outside Asmara require pre-arranged travel permits.

There are also security risks – including banditry and kidnapping – associated with militant and criminal groups operating along parts of the country's borders with Ethiopia and Sudan. Military raids and landmines present a considerable security risk along the disputed border with Ethiopia. Travel to the borders with Ethiopia, Djibouti and Sudan should be avoided. Travel permits to these areas are rarely granted.

The risks of terrorist attacks and social unrest remain low.

This information is intended as a summary of the travel security environment, and the risks can change at short notice during a crisis or evolving situation. Please check our travel security alerts to ensure you are informed of the most recent developments.
