Risk Summary

Opportunistic street crime is the main risk to travellers and is particularly prevalent in the capital city Port of Spain and in other urban areas. Travellers should adopt sensible security precautions at all times to reduce the risk of exposure to crime. There have been reports of assaults and muggings in tourist areas. Crime hot spots on Trinidad include Port of Spain, San Fernando, the boroughs of Arima and Chaguanas, and the San Juan/Laventille and Diego Martin regional corporations.

Violent crime is also a concern, though most incidents occur in lower-income neighbourhoods, which business travellers are unlikely to visit. Incidents of more serious crime, including gang-related murders and kidnap-for-ransom, are increasing, though the overwhelming majority of victims are locals. Locally-based Islamic extremists frequently adopt threatening and inflammatory anti-Western rhetoric. However, they pose little real threat to foreign personnel.

This information is intended as a summary of the travel security environment; however, the risks can change at short notice during a crisis or evolving situation. Please check our travel security alerts to ensure you are informed of the most recent developments.
