Risk Summary

Economic difficulties and the relaxation of the state's security grip following the January 2011 revolution have fuelled an increase in crime rates; however, petty crime remains the main risk affecting visitors in urban areas. Sporadic socio-political unrest in the form of strikes and protests can cause significant travel disruption. Associated disturbances – such as violence by protesters – can also pose indirect risks to travellers, though this applies chiefly to economically deprived governorates in the south and interior. Along the borders with Libya and Algeria, travellers face mostly indirect risks from incursions by armed groups.

This information is intended as a summary of the travel security environment; however, the risks can change at short notice during a crisis or evolving situation. Please check our travel security alerts to ensure you are informed of the most recent developments.
