    MEDIUM TRAVEL RISK for Mauritania
HIGH TRAVEL RISK for Eastern desert areas

Risk Summary

The crime rates are moderate, but rising. Petty crime such as pickpocketing poses the greatest risk to foreigners. Burglaries, robberies and assaults, though infrequent, have also been reported. Violent crime remains rare. There is a credible risk of attacks by Islamist extremists against government or foreign assets and/or personnel. Militants or bandits may also kidnap foreigners in border areas with Algeria and Mali, where banditry – in particular carjackings – is also a risk. Socio-political protests can descend into violence. Infrastructure is poor, including in the capital Nouakchott. Landmines pose a risk along the border with the disputed territory of Western Sahara (Morocco).

This information is intended as a summary of the travel security environment; however, the risks can change at short notice during a crisis or evolving situation. Please check our travel security alerts to ensure you are informed of the most recent developments.
