    EXTREME MEDICAL RISK for Haiti
    HIGH TRAVEL RISK for Haiti

Risk Summary

Violent crime is a major concern, particularly in the capital Port-au-Prince. Frequent crimes include kidnap-for-ransom, carjackings, home invasions, shootings, armed robberies, residential theft and homicides. Such crimes, which are fuelled by a dire economic situation, widespread poverty and the easy availability of firearms, present a significant security concern for business travellers, especially in Port-au-Prince. The densely inhabited areas of cities such as Cap-Haïtien, Les Cayes and Gonaives have also witnessed an increase in the murder rate, with most killings taking place during attempted robberies. Violent homophobic attacks and sexual assault are also a concern.

Protests occur frequently in the capital and other major cities, often at short notice. Such gatherings regularly descend into violence and demonstrators are liable to stage roadblocks. Haiti is prone to hurricanes from June to November, which bring strong winds and heavy rain and can cause severe flooding. In addition, the Caribbean tectonic plate is situated just off the north coast and tremors are occasionally felt.

This information is intended as a summary of the travel security environment; however, the risks can change at short notice during a crisis or evolving situation. Please check our travel security alerts to ensure you are informed of the most recent developments.
