A 17-year-old British girl was evacuated by International SOS (SOS) from Phuket to Singapore at 1500 hours (Singapore time) today.
The girl, who suffers from an open fracture on her leg, is a victim of the tidal waves caused by the Sumatra earthquake on Sunday, 26 December 2004. She was air-lifted to Singapore on an air ambulance, and accompanied by a SOS doctor and nurse. A British family also arrived at 2150 hours last night for immediate medical treatment in Singapore. A doctor and nurse accompanied them on the air ambulance on their flight from Phuket. SOS has set up a Crisis Centre in Phuket and is sending two additional senior doctors to co-ordinate SOS response and logistics arrangements. The 9-member Crisis team in Phuket is traveling to nearby hospitals to identify and assist clients who require medical help. "The key focus of our medical and logistics team in Phuket is to locate and assist clients that are in hospitals. We will do our best to render them medical assistance and evacuate them to the nearest safe haven to seek medical treatment if necessary," said Dr Pascal Rey-Herme, Group Medical Director, International SOS. An additional dispatch team will be sent to Krabi to assist with increasing numbers of clients' requests for information and assistance. SOS has also established a dedicated Missing Persons Desk in Singapore for the purpose of collating all client information relating to missing persons and is working closely with embassies, consulates and hospitals in the affected areas. The company is also providing 24-hour support, including on-going medical and security advice and assistance, as well as crisis decision support to its clients via its network of alarm centres in Asia.
