Following the World Health Organisation's confirmation that there has been a new case of suspected SARS in Beijing, International SOS, which provides medical and security services to corporations around the world, is actively monitoring the situation and posting regular updates on a special SARS Online Guide. At this time, International SOS advises that there is little or no risk to travellers or expatriates and there is no need to alter travel plans. The company has an already established SARS Support network including senior doctors and medical professionals in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong who will be contributing regular updates to the guide.
The reported case involves a 20-year-old nurse who developed SARS-like symptoms in Beijing on 5 April and who was later admitted to hospital on 7 April. Her condition did not improve, so she was transferred on 14 April to a second Beijing hospital and placed in intensive care. Results of initial blood tests were received today, April 22. They indicate probable infection with the SARS coronavirus. However, further testing is needed before a SARS diagnosis can be confirmed.
Through contact tracing, 171 contacts have been identified. All have been placed under observation. Of these, five have developed a fever.
If confirmed, this will be the first case of SARS since January this year. That month, authorities in Guangdong Province confirmed SARS infections in a 35-year-old businessman and a 20-year-old waitress.
