Police Uncover Terror Plot in United Kingdom

10 August 2006

London

British Police have arrested several people suspected of a terror plot to blow up aircraft in mid-flight using explosives smuggled in cabin baggage. The alleged plotters intended to smuggle explosives aboard planes flying from the UK to the US.

As more detail is not immediately available form London authorities, reports indicate that 20 aircraft had been targeted and approximately 20 individuals arrested.

British air safety authorities have imposed additional security restrictions on air passengers, allowing passengers only to take onboard personal items, such passports and wallets under the condition they are in transparent plastic bags. Laptops, mobile phones, iPods, and spectacle cases have to be checked in.

International SOS Comment

As a result of this operation, the country threat level has been raised to its highest alert for terrorist attacks and extra security is in place at British airports, including restrictions on cabin baggage to prevent the possibility of undetected explosives being taken onboard.

Since the July  7, 2005 terrorist attacks, security services in the UK have conducted several anti-terrorist operations under the Terrorism Act resulting in the arrest of a number of suspects. Today's operation is likely to be the culmination of a major covert counter-terrorist operation lasting several months and probably involving various security services.

International SOS continues to monitor the situation.

Travel Advice

International SOS advises members that travel to the UK can proceed at this stage. Security at all airports in the UK has been tightened and delays are expected. Members are advised to comply with the additional restrictions and to be prepared to report to departure airports earlier than normally required. Travellers with onward connections should check with their airlines for additional requirements.

It is expected that all flights to and from the UK will be subject to these restrictions until further notice. Travellers should confirm flight details and baggage requirements with their airline prior to departure. Travellers should maintain vigilance at airports and while traveling and report unattended packages or suspicious activities to the authorities. Under no circumstances should suspicious items be touched, moved or closely inspected.
