International SOS support clients affected by the Christchurch earthquake

23 February 2011

Sydney

International SOS, the world's leading international healthcare, medical and security assistance, and concierge services company, is helping dozens of clients affected by the Christchurch earthquake.  With disruptions to power, water, telecommunication and flights, International SOS is helping members with immediate advice, ground transport and accommodation, emergency cash and supplies, and arranging access to flights to other locations within New Zealand and Australia.

Immediately upon being advised of the earthquake, International SOS convened a Crisis Management Team with medical, security and logistics specialists from its Alarm Centres in Sydney and Singapore and personnel based in Auckland and Christchurch.

On the evening of the earthquake, International SOS activated an Incident Management Team comprising a doctor and two logistical personnel.  These staff have been deployed to Christchurch to provide on-the-ground support for clients. This team has delivered in-person medical support on the evening of the earthquake and ongoing help in finding, advising and relocating personnel.

International SOS encourages its clients to call one of its 28 alarm centres for any help for affected personnel.  Additional information is available via the members section of the International SOS website (http://www.internationalsos.com/).

Michael Gardner, Regional Managing Director of International SOS, expressed sympathy for the people of Christchurch and visitors affected by the earthquake. "This is a devastating event, and its impact will be felt for years to come.  The response by New Zealand's emergency services has been admirable in the face of such a tragedy.  We are proud to be able to help clients get through this difficult time and make their way back home safely and quickly."

Travel Advice
International SOS is closely monitoring the developing situation in Christchurch.  Our current advice includes:

  • Organisations with personnel affected should activate their crisis management plans
  • Avoid travel to the earthquake-affected areas at this time.
  • Be aware of disruption to travel and essential services in earthquake-affected areas.
  • Personnel flying to and from Christchurch airport should reconfirm their bookings with the relevant airline.
  • Adhere to emergency services instructions.
  • All organisations should account for staff.
  • Be aware of falling masonry; do not re-enter buildings until they have been given the all clear.
  • Be aware that aftershocks could pose a risk to life and property.
  • Drink only boiled or bottled water, or canned or carbonated beverages as the local water supply may be contaminated; avoid contact with contaminated water or sewer spills.
  • Practice good hygiene. Wash your hands with soap and safe water, or use a hand sanitizer. This is especially important before preparing food or eating.
  • Clean skin cuts and abrasions thoroughly. Treat skin infections early.
  • Monitor local media and our website for further updates on the situation.
