03 November 2009

Singapore

The Singapore General Hospital (SGH), International SOS and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore (Duke-NUS) today signed a ground breaking agreement to share Singapore's best practices in emergency medical care and general health to medical professionals working across  borders.

SGH in alliance with International SOS will develop emergency and general medical care programmes to upgrade the skills, knowledge and training capabilities of the medical professionals from International SOS and its clients.

The alliance also marks the foray of the latest and best in emergency medicine into the complex, remote and extreme environments of both developing and developed world, where International SOS currently operates.

“As leaders in academic medicine and owners of the more technologically-advanced emergency facilities in the region, it is consistent with our philosophy to share our experience and expertise in emergency care with healthcare workers working across borders. We have had many opportunities to engage in the improvement of emergency care in our community and on an international scale. We will continue to build and leverage on our professional networks to help provide better health care in even the most remote environments,” said Professor Ang Chong Lye, Chief Executive Officer, SGH.

Dr Pascal Rey-Herme, Co-Founder and Group Medical Director of International SOS, said: “International SOS is a global expert in medical/healthcare and is committed to 24/7 medical assistance as well as to provide healthcare services to our clients around the world. This pioneering alliance enables us to leverage on Singapore’s quality emergency medical care and general practice for the benefit of our core medical professionals and our clients.”

The specially developed curriculum “Program in General & Emergency Medical Care” (PGEMC) is customized for medical personnel from International SOS. The PGEMC is a four-year programme with structured learning through clinical attachments, skills and simulations training and e learning with developmental assessments, that is quality-assured by Duke University and Duke-NUS.

“Duke and Duke-NUS will bring our expertise in cutting-edge medical education to this alliance, through our clinician educators and quality e-learning modules”, said Professor Robert Kamei, Vice Dean of Education at Duke-NUS.

The first year intake of 50 students will have to do monthly assignments (through clinical emodules), annual practical training attachments at SGH, together with clinical research under mentorship of the robust academia of Duke-NUS.

Over the three years, the annual intake will rise to about 250 students. At the end of every batch, the alliance partners will award these medical professionals with the relevant PGEMC official recognition.
