International SOS Sends three Teams for Earthquake Relief efforts

31 May 2006

Indonesia

Following the devastating 6.2 earthquake off the coast of Yogyakarta on Saturday, May 27, 2006, International SOS Jakarta deployed three emergency teams to the affected area for general health assessment and to provide support where possible to the community at large. These teams will provide emergency assistance on behalf of our corporate clients and multinational non-governmental agencies supporting the relief efforts.

Assisting Relief Efforts
International SOS is working closely with the Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM), an agency deployed on behalf of the EU, and AusAid, an organization deployed by the Australian government.   At this time we are also providing management assistance to a field hospital set up in the sports center at the University of Yogyakarta to treat the critically injured. On May 31, International SOS sent a 12-man surgical envoy as well as medical supplies in partnership with Australian and other local healthcare teams.

Situation on the ground
The current situation in Yogyakarta and surrounding cities remains extremely difficult with the most affected area being Bantul to the south of the city. Other badly affected areas are Klaten city, Jatiwarno and Wedi districts. The airport is partially open to aid flights on a reduced runway. Conditions in the hospitals remain critical with shortages in supplies. Please contact International SOS for more information on this developing situation.
