Victim of China Bus Crash Evacuated to Malaysia

A seriously injured 64-year-old Malaysian man was first moved from the bus accident site in Hezhou to Guilin via a road ambulance. The man is scheduled to arrive in Kuala Lumpur today at approximately 2130 hours on a Hawker 800 International SOS air ambulance. On this ambulance flight, which departed Guilin at 1630 local time, the injured man was attended to by a medical team consisting of an intensive care unit doctor and nurse.   

Earlier this afternoon, International SOS also arranged for a road ambulance and a coach bus to bring another 10 victims and their families from Hezhou to Guilin. They will undergo medical assessments in Guilin before they return home. The remaining victims in Hezhou are scheduled to arrive in Guilin on March 9, 2006 on road ambulances escorted by medical teams from International SOS.

International SOS is working closely with American Home Assurance Company, Malaysia, American International Assurance Company, Limited (Malaysia), and Aviva Insurance Berhad to provide assistance to the victims of the bus crash. International SOS is the official assistance provider of these insurance companies.

Upon receiving the call for help on March 7, 2006, International SOS immediately sent medical and logistics personnel to Hezhou. An International SOS local correspondent arrived in Hezhou within hours of the accident. Working with the local doctors and hospitals, the correspondent ascertained the location of each victim and obtained preliminary medical reports. First response medical teams from Shanghai and Beijing, comprising two doctors and two nurses, arrived in Hezhou on March 7, 2006. Their immediate task was to assess the medical conditions of the victims and develop a plan of action for the victims to receive appropriate medical care.  At the same time, a logistics team comprising of a Network Manager from Malaysia and a Chinese-speaking coordinator from Shanghai were on the ground to assist victims and their families. A third medical team, comprising of two nurses and two doctors from Malaysia and a nurse from Hong Kong are also in Hezhou, with additional medical equipment continue to support the rescue effort.
