International SOS opened its office in South Africa in Johannesburg in 1993 and today is home to a 24-hour alarm center and the regional head office for sub-Saharan Africa, supporting our regional offices in Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Madagascar and Namibia. The International SOS South Africa alarm center in Johannesburg specializes in delivering medical assistance, evacuation and speciality services throughout South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa for insurance companies, corporations and individuals. South Africa has rapidly become the medical hub of Africa and as such International SOS has increasingly developed its medical transport services to facilitate access to appropriate medical care.
We operate a full-scale 24-hour alarm center in Johannesburg, equipped with sophisticated telecommunication systems and state-of-the-art medical transport facilities. We promptly respond to calls from our clients for medical, roadside, and legal assistance on a national basis. Our representatives dispatch whatever service is needed through our network of over 5,000 service providers in South Africa.
Our fleet of dedicated air ambulances is the largest and most advanced in Africa and coordinates over 670 medical evacuations a year, extending as far as Europe, Middle East, Ascension Island, Maldives, Diego Garcia, West, East and Central Africa.
The air ambulances are able to reach 19 African countries without refuelling thereby ensuring that the vast distances across the African continent are managed by a team of experts who understand Africa’s logistical challenges. This air ambulance service is the only CAMTS (Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services) accredited service outside of the North Americas (http://www.camts.org/).
