Alert: Indonesia

Indonesia   April 30, 2001

Potential for street violence on Monday 30 April in Jakarta
On Monday 30 April Parliament will make announcements regarding the next stage of its attempt to remove the President from office. Its likely that they will censure him a second time with the aim of holding a special session of parliament in June or July where there will be an Impeachment hearing. A second censure on Monday is likely to lead to clashes between Wahid's supporters and opposing forces. This will lead to disruptions to normal daily routines and business schedules during the period Monday 30 April and Tuesday 1 May next week.

Public speculation regarding possible civil disorder in Jakarta during the period leading up to April 30th has been high. Although much of this speculation is exaggerated there is no doubt that public displays of political protest against Wahid as well as rallies in support of the President are likely to increase in both size and intensity over the coming weeks.
